Should we teach the tithe?
Some friends have suggested that Lafayette would be in a better place financially if we taught people to tithe. This article from the Wall Street Journal explores the question quite well. What do you think? Should we teach people to tithe? Should we challenge people to give more? Less? Let them decide for themselves? Should it be a flat percentage for all people, or graduated, like the income tax?
I’ll share my opinion, eventually, but I’m holding back for now, so that conversation doesn’t get stifled by the pastor’s opinion.

If you mean, teaching tithe, as in “You must give 10% or you are unfit to come to this church”, then no.
If you mean teaching tithe, as in “What does God expect us to do with the blessings he gives us”, then yes.
I think we shouldn’t necessarily challenge people to give more, but challenge people to think about the costs of maintaining a church, its staff, and the blessings of those things in our lives and to give accordingly (kind of a, “you get what you give”).
